In 2005, I was 40 years old and in the best shape
of my life.  Later that year I changed jobs, leaving
the "good life" in a college athletics department to
drive a desk in corporate America.  Five years
later, my 12-year old daughter asked me to go for
a run with her one night.  A half mile into the short
run, I didn't know if I was going to have a stroke,
hurl...or both.

Good Lord!  How could I have gotten so badly out
of shape so quickly?
 I realized something had to
change so I bought a treadmill and started a
walk-run program.  Before long, I could run
30-minutes on the treadmill.  Of course, the
logical next step was to take the running to the
great outdoors.  One afternoon while jogging
along a greenway trail, it hit me that it was sort of
silly (for me, anyway) to be out there running
without a
purpose.  So I found a purpose and
signed up for a race:  The Resolution Run 5k on
January 1, 2011.

I finished the run on that chilly January morning
with a sub 30-minute effort and was quite proud
of myself for what I had accomplished.  Then I
was struck with another thought:  "I run 3-miles at
lunch all the time.  It's kind of silly to get up this
early in the morning do it."  So I decided to double
down and signed up for a 10k.  I liked the
distance but soon found that 10k's are few and
far between.

Not long after, some friends recommended that I
try a half marathon.  So, on April 30, 2011, I
completed the Country Music Half Marathon in
Nashville.  Suddenly, I had found my passion!

In just over two years, I have logged more than
1,600 road miles.  For hard core runners that may
not seem like much, but for me it's
huge.  To
date, I have completed a marathon, 16 half
marathons, a 15k race, seven 10k's, six 5k's, and
a five miler  -- all the while, helping raise money
for countless charities, including more than
$2,000 for The Wounded Warriors Project.

Why am I doing it, you ask?  It's all because I
couldn't keep up with a 12-year old girl on a mile
and a half run.
In March 2013, as part of the Dust Bowl Marathon series, I completed five half marathons in five states in five days.  Since
my first half marathon on April 30, 2011, I have completed 16 half marathons in 12 states AND one full marathon -- the
amazing 2012 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC.

At the Dust Bowl series I met several Half Fanatics -- an actual group of runners who are fanatical about running half
marathons.  Well, since I was on my way to completing 16 in less than two years, I figured I was already a fanatic.
However, they gave me the opportunity to be a card-carrying Fanatic, of which I am now Fanatic #3845.
